The Sturgeon flows past a small rock sitting on the river bed, creating a small whirlpool and eddies. Typically this time of year the water would be very much deeper here.
I was just mentioning to some acquaintances that the snipe had been heard in the area over the last few days but I hadn't seen it yet, when it made its distinctive call right at my feet (well 6 feet away).
