Drumming Log

A drumming sound brought me to this spot a few days ago, checking back I saw this Ruffed Grouse scurry off into the deep bush several times. This time, approaching from a different angle it sat and posed for me and the dog. I left it there after taking a few shots. Sturgeon County.

Enjoy the sunshine

Spring seems to be the best time to photograph these hares. Even so I had to reach deep into the undergrowth with a very long lens to get this shot. It didn't seem too perturbed by our presence, as it sat in a ray of bush penetrating sunshine, not moving for anything, perhaps it thinks it is invisible? Sturgeon County.

The cache

Its early spring and this squirrel seems to be pondering whether it can afford to finish off eating this cache of berries it has been guarding all winter. Sturgeon County.

Running for it

Waves of Canada Geese pass over and heading north in an apparent intent to move out of the way of the incoming storm. Sturgeon County.

This hare sat on the trail for a while, posed for a few photos, then scooted off into the bush. Sturgeon County.

Eyeing the spot

This approachable Black-backed Woodpecker looks for the next spot to hammer its beak into the dead tree in search of bugs to eat. Sturgeon County.

Staying Around

This female Black-backed Woodpecker first showed up on this very spot in November and has spent the winter in our area. Sturgeon County.

Point of Interest

That would be me and the dog as we walked home from an unsuccessful sunset shoot in the gloom of dusk. Have to practice using a telephoto lens at night while holding onto an excited dog technique. Sturgeon County.

Shady

Deep in its forest habitat a Ruffed Grouse struts along a log. Sturgeon County.

Spring storm front

An unusual storm (for the time of year) brings snow and rain into distant St Albert. Sturgeon County.

Before the Green

Spring colour in the bush is a mix of patches of white snow and brown vegetation,. This is matched perfectly by the Snowshoe Hare's gradual colour change from the brilliant white of winter to the muddy brown of summer. Sturgeon County.

Evening light over Big Lake

A calm evening and some cloud cover made for a colourful after glow from the sun after it slipped below the horizon. St Albert.

Golden Reflection

The ever changing pools of meltwater make a perfect mirror for the golden light of the setting sun over Big Lake. St Albert.

The Roost

It is early spring (in theory it's still winter) and the Canada Geese have arrived back for their evening roost as night descends over Big Lake. St Albert.
