Ruddy Duck (fm) and brood
Big Lake Interpretive trail. Sturgeon County.
For the second Friday evening in a row while walking the dog I saw an "unusual" bird at the same surface water pond on the edge of a canola field. Last week it was an Avocet, this week a Killdeer, the difference this week was that I immediately went back with my camera. Sturgeon County.

Frog in the swamp
The woods in Lois Hole Park are very wet with recent rains, this little frog was hopping around in the muddy waters of a small stream. Lois Hole Park, St Albert.
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (FM)
Not such a clean shot like I got of the male, the pair were very close and I assume were feeding their young nearby. Lois Hole Park, St Albert.

As I was taking this shot (which is a fairly heavy crop) I thought this Red-tailed hawk was bringing a young coot from the lake back to it's own chick, but now, looking at the colouration and legs, I am not so sure what it could be. Maybe a Sora Rail chick?
An adult Great Blue Heron guards the nest while the other adult is off hunting for food. Its good to see the pair have been so far successful in producing young but this is the only nesting pair this year in what only a couple of years ago was a thriving colony, hope for the future maybe but this colony (if you can call it that now) is in desperate trouble.

Surprisingly approachable on Big Lake Interpretive Trail
These guys nest in the tall grass alongside the Big Lake Interpretive trail so you can't help flushing them as you walk by, they fly in a circle around you until you have left their "area" so present excellent opportunities for BIF shots, but please don't linger too long.
Deer graze through a meadow in the spring morning sunshine. Sturgeon County.
A pair decided that just above a photographer walking his dog was quite the perfect spot to circle around and play their mating game. Sturgeon County.
In bright green spring foliage. Lois Hole Park, St Albert.
Deep in the undergrowth at dusk, there is some weird colour in the photo due to the low light and shooting through vegetation so I did a B&W conversion, some minor retouching done also. Note the engorged ticks on the ears. Sturgeon County.
